Bankroll Management for Beginners

Bankroll management is still an unknown to many online poker players, even if after all this is just another fancy term that is being given to a simple thing. The bankroll represents the budget that you have set up for play and it’s usually made out of the money that you have deposited in your online poker room.

The concept of bankroll management is to stake only a small amount of money for one game, this way you will be able to afford to go through the variance periods, when the luck factor will affect you and your bankroll will go down. By taking into consideration a bankroll management strategy, you will no longer go through the difficult times when you go bankrupt and you have to make another deposit in order to continue playing.

Bankroll management is also going to tell you what is your current skill and what are the limits where you should play. And if you manage to gain more skill, your bankroll will automatically go up and you will start afford to play at higher limits.

Another important bankroll management tip is that you should always be prepared to go down the ladder of stakes in case you start losing money and your bankroll will diminish.

No Limit Cash Games – The Texas Hold’em or Omaha no limit cash games should be played only when you have at least 30 buy-ins minimum. If you’re planning on playing a NL game where the minimum buy in is $10 you should have a bankroll of at least $300.

Limit Cash Games – The bankroll management rules are saying that a bankroll of 300 Big Blinds are more than enough to stay out of trouble.

However in case you are planning to play poker for a living, your margins should be a lot higher than that. These bankroll management limits mean that you only have to risk a fraction of your bankroll every time you are playing poker.

In case you are going to run through a difficult period, you should definitely walk away from the tables and take a break. Those players that cannot control this are definitely going to lose more money than the ones that know that playing with a heartache and frustration is not going to get you anywhere.
